Petitions

SUBJECT: SIGN THE CYPRUS PETITION AT www.greece.org/themis/cyprus/ Washington: After the successful ongoing Halki www.greece.org/themis/halki/ petition, Themis administration announced today the launching of a new petition aimed at supporting the territorial integrity of Cyprus, as well as supporting the right to self determination for the people of Cyprus. The government of Cyprus is coming close to fulfilling one of its most important foreign policy goals which is becoming a member of the European Union. The Themis administration supports the right of the Cypriot government to enter the European Union as the sole legal authority over all of Cyprus and all Cypriot citizens.
Entry into the European Union for the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus is a matter of self determination.
From 1878 to 1960, Cyprus was ruled by Great Britain. During the 1950's, the people of Cyprus, who are overwhelmingly Greek, fought against the British colonial rule for their right to independence and Demanding self-determination as well as Enosis - the union of Cyprus with Greece. In 1960, the London-Zurich Accords and the Treaty of Guarantee established Cyprus as an independent Republic. On July 20 and August 14, 1974, Turkish forces invaded and occupied thirtyseven percent of Cypriot territory. The Turkish occupation has been responsible for the ethnic cleansing of over 200,000 Greek Cypriots.
Please visit www.greece.org/themis/cyprus/ and sign the petition. Ask your association, church, community and your friends to collect paper petitions and mail them to us. Communicate with us at action-cyprus@hec.greece.org and we will give you full details.
Themis www.greece.org/themis is a project of HEC (Hellenic Electronic Center) http://www.greece.org/ which is a non-profit, non-commercial Electronic Association.
